Abstract

Importance of the study of the frontier at the turn of 20 th – 21 st centuries is caused by the increasing role of intercultural contacts. The last decade in native and foreign ethnocultural investigations the problem of borders became very popular. In this case borders are understood in wide sense: from legally stated borders to imaginary bounds. The specific type of borders is frontier. There is the need of deep and comprehensive historical and ethnography investigation of border territories, which will take into consideration all spheres of people’s life. What is more this investigation should be held not only by “field” method but also by historical sources, which allow to reconstruct traditional customs and culture of people of previous epochs. In this article the main stages of ethnocultural history of northwest border territories: Ingria and Pskov’s border with Estonia and Latvia is considered. Moreover, it is offered to determine some principles of historical and ethnographical investigation of northwest frontier of Russia: firstly, comprehensive investigation of population of this territory, which takes into consideration the interaction between ethnocultural groups in all branches of traditional culture (material, spiritual and social); secondly, any investigation of culture of border population should considerate the influence of the biggest cultural centers (Saint-Petersburg, Pskov-Pechersky monastery); thirdly, investigators should considerate chronological borders of the existence of any separate event and the ethnocultural system on the whole.
