Abstract

This article covers musical life and cultural events that took place in Kazan in the period from January till August 1914. The research is based on the analysis of local periodicals, mainly the “Kazan telegraph” newspaper, which was popular among the citizens and paid much attention to the news and problems of the cultural life of Kazan and Russia. The work makes an attempt to give a full list of musical groups that worked in Kazan during that period, to estimate their professional level, to reveal the specificity of their repertoire, and to characterize the tastes of the local community.
