Abstract

The aim of the work was to evaluate the expression and the topography of changes in bioelectric activity of the retina in patients with an initial stage of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) of «dry» form». In 9 patients (18 eyes) and in 12 individuals of the control group comparable by the age (mean age 65 years), there were recorded the ganzfeld electroretinogram (ERG), the multifocal ERG (mf-ERG) and flicker ERG (FERG) in the conditions of the dark and light adaptation. In the early AMD with a small single or multiple dry druses, changes of bioelectric activity of the retina were found, which differ from the normal tendency of the ERG decrease typical to physiological ageing of the retina. According to the FERG of a wide range of frequencies, the reduction of the photoreceptors’ function in AMD patients was more manifested than the bipolar cell depression, and the function of neurons of scotopic system was more decreased than of photopic system. In multifocal electroretinography, the local responses from parafoveal area of the retina were reduced more significantly in comparison with the foveal central zone.
