Abstract

Enterovirus 71 is one of the major causes of Hand-Foot-and-Mouth disease (HFMD) all over the world. In the past 10 years epidemics of HFMD with neurological complications and fatal cases among children have been frequent in Asia-Pacific Region. In Europe only small outbreaks and sporadic cases of EV71 infection involving several people have been registered in the recent years. In Russia risk of EV71 infection epidemic was the highest in Khabarovsk region, which borders an endemic region (China). The level of asymptomatic circulation of EV71 was estimated by studying seroepidemiology of the virus among children in Khabarovsk region. 70% of healthy children aged 3-5 years in Khabarovsk had antibodies to EV71, indicating high frequency of asymptomatic infection and solid population immunity. Fraction of seropositive healthy children aged 3-4 years in Komsomolsk-na-Amure (city situated on Amur river 235 km north from Khabarovsk) was 22.2%, which indicates low degree of population immunity. Therefore, EV71 is circulating in the Khabarovsk region, but does not cause morbidity.
