Abstract

The article deals with the interaction of the people of the North with the representatives of the Western civilization, and how this process influenced the outlook of the indigenous population (by case study of Aleuts' relations with the Russian Empire and the United States). The chronological scope of the study covers the period from the 1820-s, when Ioann Veniaminov arrived to the Aleutian Islands, to the 1940-s, when the region was visited by Theodore P. Bank. The research applied sources and materials from the Russian State Historical Archive in Moscow.
