Abstract

The aim of study was to determine the efficacy of respiratory biofeedback method for correction of functional respiratory disorders (FRD) in children 8-12 years old with various psychosomatic diseases combined with functional respiratory disorders. The studies were conducted in two groups: an observation group (n = 32) and a clinical control group (n = 15). All children were treated in the psychosomatic department of Clinic of Institute of Physiology SB RAMS. Besides the basic therapy, the observation group received a respiratory biofeedback treatment course. Parameters of lung function, breathing pattern and level of anxiety were obtained and investigated twice: at the time of hospital admission and before discharge. There were positive changes observed in both groups after treatment the clinical manifestations of FDR had reduced. However, the level of anxiety and breathing pattern has changed significantly in observation group only. Their anxiety level has decreased from 21,6 to 18,8 points, FetCO2 increased from 4,7 to 5,1%, respiratory rate decreased from 18,5 to 17,1. In the control group no significant changes were found. Thus we assume that a conscious adjustment of the patient breathing pattern using respiratory biofeedback can reduce the level of anxiety and restore the pattern of breathing.
