Abstract

Continuous rise in thyroid cancer morbidity is the most important problem of the post-Chernobyl period. We analyzed clinical features of 1185 patients who were above 18 years of age when the Chernobyl atomic station catastrophe occurred. The post-Chernobyl thyroid cancer is characterized by a higher rate of multicentric growth with specific clinical symptoms. The first sign of thyroid cancer with multicentric growth in adults is a set of symptoms including weakness, decreased abilities, fatigue, somnolence (56.5% of cases). Thyroid cancer is often associated with myoma of the womb (23.6%). The active detection strategy resulted in a dramatic rise in early thyroid cancer (pT1-2N0M0) in the region of Bryansk (86.1%) thus providing a basis for better treatment outcomes.
