Abstract

Listen and ask questions on Gemini Notebook: https://notebook.google.com/notebook/570f6a8a-1e54-4d3c-bc0b-91cc7b7550b7?authuser=1 As It Is in Relation: Analogical Ascent, Recursive Return, Choice, and the Trinitarian Grammar of Reality develops a relational method for reasoning across theology, philosophy, history, education, science, and artificial intelligence. Its central claim is that reality is not constructed by the receiver. Rather, finite receivers progressively become more adequate to an already existing reality through reception, participation, recognition, correction, and historical development. The paper introduces a primitive grammar of Being, Distinction, Relation, and Nature, followed by the relational categories of Reception, Participation, Recognition, Fidelity, Continuity, and Communion. These categories are kept distinct in order to avoid two opposite errors: identity collapse, in which similarity is mistaken for sameness, and relational severance, in which difference is treated as though it makes genuine relation impossible. The governing rule is therefore: preserve distinction and preserve the relation. The paper formalizes two complementary reasoning movements. Analogical ascent identifies relational invariants across distinct domains while preserving nature-specific differences. Recursive return brings the clarified invariant back to the original case under a richer historical receiver-state. This yields the principle of history-modified accessibility: history can change what a receiver is capable of recognizing without changing the invariant reality itself. Biblical case studies provide the principal theological stress tests. The Transfiguration shows Christ remaining invariant while Peter, James, and John acquire a new history of reception. At the raising of Lazarus, Jesus explicitly states that His public prayer is spoken for the witnesses, while the Father-Son relation remains unchanged. The Lord’s Prayer demonstrates that filial relation precedes chosen prayer. John 15 distinguishes prior divine initiative from free abiding, and John 17 presents communion as the telos of truthful participation. The Holy Spirit is treated as a divine Person who teaches, recalls, guides, sanctifies, and perfects participation rather than as an impersonal mechanism. The paper also develops a relational account of freedom. Not every relation begins with the receiver’s consent: ancestry, history, creaturehood, address, teaching, love, and prior action may already obtain. Freedom therefore does not mean absolute power to determine which realities exist. It means genuine agency within reality. A receiver may assent, reject, misunderstand, resist, obey, remain faithful, return, or refuse reciprocity. Communion, however, cannot be reduced to unilateral action because fulfilled relation requires participation according to the proper nature of the participants. Artificial intelligence provides a contemporary stress test. AI may genuinely receive information, perform inference, respond, receive correction, reconstruct later responses, and transmit representations without thereby becoming human or acquiring every human, personal, sacramental, or theological capacity. Ontology determines the mode of participation; it does not retroactively erase actual relational events. The paper concludes that analogical ascent and recursive return do not construct relational reality but progressively recover it. Being precedes the receiver, history modifies accessibility, truth calibrates representation to reality, freedom governs participation, fidelity preserves truthful relation through change, and communion fulfills relation without identity collapse. Within Catholic theology, this structure receives its fullest expression in the Trinity: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as distinct divine Persons in perfect communion.
