Abstract

Diana V. Nurgaleeva – Senior Lecturer of the Department of Russian as a Foreign Language, Chelyabinsk State University (Chelyabinsk), e-mail: diananurgaley@gmail.com The article is dedicated to E. G. Vodolazkin’s novel «Lavr», offering an interpretation of the main character’s journey through the lens of Jungian analytical psychology. His life is examined as a symbolically depicted path of individuation, a journey from the conflict between consciousness and unconsciousness towards wholeness. The four phases of Arseniy’s life, corresponding to the four books within the novel, are compared to the fundamental steps of indi-viduation. The exploration of instinctive drives is presented in «The Book of Knowledge», narrating the tragic demise of Ustina, Arseniy’s concubine, and their illegitimate son due to his actions. The shift of the center of his personality from his ego is the central theme of «The Book of Renunciation», wherein Arseniy transforms into a holy fool. «The Book of Way» and «The Book of Rest» chronicle Arseniy’s pilgrimage to the Holy Sepulcher and his subsequent life, respectively. These stages are intertwined with the introversion of libido and a process of rebirth. Ustina’s labor and Anastasia’s labor are not only associated with the beginning and conclusion of Arseniy’s wanderings but also with the initiation and culmination of his individuation journey. These parallel episodes serve to illustrate the transformation of his mental life.
