Abstract

This research focused on an analysis of current flow within a reservoir to determine the cause of sediment accumulation. A two-dimensional flow software was used to determine the magnitude and direction of flow velocity vectors in two stages of operation of the hydroelectric plant. From the model results it was found that the geometric characteristics of the reservoir make the flow pattern consists of a number vortexes that provide low speed zones, which induce the formation of sediment islands. Finally, a proposal is made of changes in the geometry of the reservoir, to modify the flow pattern and try to reduce sedimentation.
