This research explores stigma and racial discrimination experienced by indigenous and Afro-Ecuadorian university students in Quito during the 2025–2026 academic period. Using a mixed-methods approach (qualitative and quantitative), the study seeks to understand the psychosocial dynamics that shape the inclusion, participation, and academic performance of these historically marginalized groups. Through semi-structured interviews and surveys based on the Modern Racism Scale, data were collected revealing that symbolic exclusion, microaggressions, stereotypes, and the lack of inclusive institutional policies negatively affect the well-being and permanence of indigenous and Afro-Ecuadorian students. Findings show that some indigenous students choose to forgo visible cultural markers, such as traditional clothing, to avoid social rejection or isolation. Meanwhile, Afro-Ecuadorian students often face direct discrimination linked to skin color, which impacts their self-esteem and interpersonal relationships. The research highlights that racism manifests not only as individual acts but also as structural phenomena, reinforced by social dynamics and discourses that perpetuate inequality. The absence of faculty members who represent these ethnic groups and the persistence of stereotypes within university environments further deepen symbolic and emotional exclusion. The study concludes that racial discrimination directly influences students' identity construction, sense of belonging, and academic paths, reproducing historical inequalities that persist in Ecuadorian higher education. Addressing these challenges requires comprehensive university policies that truly promote intercultural inclusion, validate cultural diversity, and dismantle systemic barriers. The ultimate aim of this study is to raise awareness within the academic community about the everyday barriers faced by indigenous and Afro-Ecuadorian students and to encourage specific actions to create a more equitable, respectful, and culturally diverse educational environment aligned with social justice principles. By shedding light on these experiences, the research aspires to become a reference point for future academic inquiries and institutional initiatives aimed at promoting genuine intercultural coexistence and equality in higher education.
