Abstract

Los moluscos constituyen un phylum numeroso y variado, habitantes de los ambientes marinos, salobres, dulceacuícolas y terrestres; se los halla desde las grandes profundidades oceánicas hasta en las zonas montañosas, a varios miles de metros sobre el nivel del mar. Después de los insectos son los invertebrados más numerosos, estimándose que en la actualidad, viven por lo menos 50000 especies pero, si se consideran los fósiles, podría esta cantidad elevarse aproximadamente a 80000. Los moluscos vivientes incluyen a organismos bien reconocidos por el público en general, como los caracoles, las almejas, las ostras, los pulpos y los calamares, cuyas dimensiones varían desde unos pocos milímetros (gastrópodos, pelecípodos) hasta 30 m de largo (cefalópodos). No obstante su diversidad, comparten características morfológicas, fisiológicas y embriológicas, además de relaciones filogenéticas, que justifican el rango taxonómico que se les ha adjudicado, si bien no es posible señalar un carácter que sea exhibido por la totalidad de sus miembros. Los moluscos son metazoarios de simetría bilateral, disimulada en los gastrópodos por un fenómeno de torsión; el celoma es pequeño y a diferencia de los anélidos carecen de segmentación, aunque en algunos se observa una repetición de órganos que determina una seudosegmentación o seudometamerismo.
