Abstract

Since German reunification thirty-five years ago, numerous publications on the GDR language have been published, though researchers’ political and biographical backgrounds have often influenced their scientific neutrality. The rapid reunification, the destruction of GDR linguistic documents, and the known diglossia between public and private language use complicate historical language documentation. This paper examines language biographical interviews using historical linguistic and discourse analysis methods. The aim is to systematize individual language memories and trace the tension between communicative and cultural memory regarding GDR history and GDR language use.
