Abstract

Introduction: This bachelor´s thesis is about simulation-based training in preparation for occupational therapy in psychiatry. Simulation-based training is being implemented more and more frequently in the curricula of healthcare studies. Students can practice essential competencies in safe spaces and gain confidence in carrying out different steps of the occupational therapy process, before entering internships. However, no studies were found regarding simulation-based training in the field of psychiatric occupational therapy.Aim: The aim of this thesis is to identify scenarios that students and occupational therapists perceive as challenging, in order to practice them in future simulation-based training courses as part of occupational therapy studies.Method: To collect the data, three qualitative interviews were conducted. Two with occupational therapy students, one before and one after finishing a psychiatric internship, the third one with an occupational therapist working in the field of psychiatry. Three semi-structured interview guidelines were used to do the interviews. The f4 software was utilized for the process of transcription and data analysis. The data was analysed according to Kuckartz (2018).Results: The results revealed which factors in psychiatric occupational therapy are perceived as challenging for the participants and which they think should be addressed in simulation-based training. The aspects that were identified as challenging regard dealing with unpredictable situations, establishing contact with patients and the implementation of group therapy setting. The results show which modalities the participants think are suitable for practicing scenarios for psychiatric occupational therapy. Conclusion: Valuable insights into individual challenges in psychiatric occupational therapy at different stages of the OT curriculum are provided by the results of this bachelor´s thesis. Those insights contribute to scenarios that will be carried out in occupational therapy studies in the future to specifically address the needs of students.
