Abstract

GEOLOGY OF THE ALMUS FAULT ZONE (ALMUS - TOKAT) Bozkurt, Erdin Faculty of Engineering Department of Geological Engineering, M. Sc. Thesis Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Ali Koçyigit 118 Pages, February 1990 ABSTRACT The study area is located between Almus in the east and Tokat in the west. The rock units exposed in the study area are divided into two major groups, namely the basement and cover rocks. The basement rocks are the Middle-Upper Triassic Tokat Group and pre-Late Liassic Bakimlxdagx complex. The Tokat Group consists of low-grade metamorphics with recrystallized limestone blocks. The Bakxmlxdagx complex is made up of mafic to ultramafic rocks. These two units have a tectonic contact. The cover rocks consists of two formations: the Lutetian Haydaroglu Formation, and Lower Miocene (?) Almus Formation. The Haydaroglu Formation consists of shallow marine volcano-sedimentary sequence and unconformably overlies the older basement rocks. The Almus Formation is composed of continental red elastics and shallow marine intercalation. It unconformably rests on the iiiHaydaroğlu Formation as well as the basement rocks. The Almus Formation is divided into three members: Gevrek (continental red coarse elastics), Serince (shallow marine elastics and carbonates), and Kızıltaş (fine red coarse elastics). The main structure in the study area is a dextral strike-slip fault zone: The Almus Fault Zone (AFZ). It is morphologically distinct, 160 km long, a few hundred metres to 12 km wide, active shear zone. To the west of Almus county, AFZ bifurcates into a number of segments and results in a simple horsetail structural pattern. It consists of three fault sets and a number of small separate fault segments. These major fault sets are the Bakımlı, Tokat and Korucak fault sets. Based on the various strike-slip fault terminologies, nature of the Almus Fault Zone, and the comparision between the structural patterns of the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) and Almus Fault Zone, the AFZ can be interpretated as one of the major splays of the NAFZ. Keywords: North Anatolian Fault Zone, Almus Fault Zone, splay fault, Almus, Tokat. Science Cade 6G6.D1.D1 IV
