Camilerde Duman Yayılımının Örnek Bir Cami Üzerinden İncelenmesi

Abstract

ANALYSIS OF SMOKE DISPERSION IN MOSQUES THROUGH A CASE STUDY OF A SAMPLE MOSQUEABSTRACTMosques, with their unique architectural features such as large prayer halls, multiple entrances, and iconic domes, pose significant fire safety challenges, especially during crowded periods due to rapid smoke dispersion and difficult evacuation conditions. This study analyzes these critical challenges using Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) through a case study of the Ahmet Hamdi Akseki Mosque in Ankara, a prominent example of modern mosque architecture with a capacity of 5,000 worshippers. Two different fire scenarios were examined on a detailed 3D model: one in the main prayer hall (Haram) and the other in the upper-floor women's gallery (Mahfil). Simulations revealed that despite the high ceiling, visibility dropped rapidly in both scenarios—falling below the critical threshold of 5 meters within 11 minutes in the Haram and within 8 minutes in the Mahfil. This striking finding underscores the crucial role of mosque-specific smoke management systems in maintaining safe evacuation conditions. The study aims to contribute to the development of design decisions sensitive to the unique architectural and functional characteristics of modern mosques. Keywords: Mosque Design, Fire Safety, Smoke Dispersion, Fire Dynamics Simulation (FDS), Evacuation Safety
