The article discusses D. S. Merezhkovsky’s innovations in the field of religious consciousness. It is shown that D. S. Merezhkovsky and his associates — the representatives of the «new religious consciousness» — were the successors of the tradition founded on the priority of the spiritual forms of being. They insisted on the fact that there is no culture without religion. This work is based on the analysis of works of N. A. Berdyaev, S. L. Frank, and other contemporaries of the ideologist of «Neochristianity», who in their critical estimation of religious work of D. S. Merezhkovsky actualized the problem of the theme «Culture and religion».
