Gel-Silver Compositions for the Rhizosphere: Laboratory Testing of Antimicrobial Properties

Abstract

Optimization of edaphic conditions and suppression of pathogenic microorganisms is possible on the basis of creating gel structures with modern growth inhibitors in the rhizosphere, among which the most promising are silver-based preparations. Testing of the efficiency of gel-silver inhibitors was carried out on pure cultures of oomycete Phytophthora infestans and enterobacterium Pectobacterium atrosepticum. The methodology of quantitative assessment of the effect of gel-silver agents on the radial growth of pathogenic microflora colonies is discussed. The exponential relationship between the doses of the inhibitors and linear (by diameter) and non-linear (in terms of area) specific growth indices of the colonies of microorganisms was revealed. It determines half maximal effective concentration EC50 values at which a two-fold retardation of the colony growth occurred, varying in the case of gels with colloidal silver in the range 1-86 ppm active ingredient. For gel compositions based on ionic silver the fungicidal effect was significantly (3-30 times) less than in colloidal forms; bactericidal properties of ions and silver nanoparticles were similar.
