Putonghua and Sichuan dialect: language loyalty and social image of idioms

Abstract

This article deals with the problem of the relationship between language and dialect in the aspect of sociolinguistic theoretical constructs such as loyalty to language and its social image. The research focuses on clarifying the place and role of the Sichuan dialect of the Chinese language in Sichuan province in Southwestern China in relation to the standard language. The study is based on the analysis of the results of the included observation of the communicative behaviour of the residents of Chengdu and the analysis of the results of the Internet survey. Putonghua, without doubt, has a high status and social prestige. However, despite certain institutional limitations in the use of the Chinese dialects, loyalty and their social image remain steadily positive, which allows talking about brilliant prospects for the vitality of the dialect.
