METHODOLOGY OF COMBINED THERMODYNMIC ESTIMATION OF WATER-RETENTION, DISPERSION AND BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY OF SOILS AND ORGANIC MATERIALS

Abstract

The combination of equilibrium centrifugation, dynamic and temperature desorption of water, and IR-spectroscopic analysis of СО2 emission makes it possible to simultaneously evaluate the thermodynamic potential (pF-curves of water retention), the effective specific surface and biological activity (basal respiration), depending on the moisture content in soils and organic materials. A fundamental basis, optimal instrumentation and a brief description of the method are given, as well as examples of quantitative analysis of soils and organic soil conditioners in the form of hydrogels and dispersed peat.
