Abstract

Cette critique évalue l'œuvre d'Ioannis K. Hassiotis, Ulysse dans les mers du sud. Présence grecque dans les territoires d'outre-mer de l'Espagne (XVIe-XVIIe siècles). Hassiotis explore migration, pratiques socio-économiques, interactions avec la bureaucratie espagnole, hispanisation des noms, rôles des Grecs notables en tant que conquistadors. La monographie examine les défis des distinctions sociales-raciales et de la pureté religieuse, révélant le relativisme religieux des Grecs face à la domination catholique. L'analyse inclut la participation grecque aux institutions administratives et foncières, ainsi que les niveaux d'éducation. La critique met en évidence la fluidité et les biais dans les sources espagnoles, explorant le terme "levantiscos" et les défis liés à l'identification ethnique. Elle souligne la complexité des relations entre le rejet et l'utilisation stratégique des compétences grecques par la monarchie espagnole, important pour comprendre le contexte historique mondial et l'influence grecque dans les territoires d'outre-mer espagnols.
