El carnaval y lo grotesco en La pared de tela de araña, de Tomás Borrás: distorsión estética y violencia discursiva

Abstract

En este artículo se aborda el uso del carnaval y la estética de lo grotesco en La pared de tela de araña (1924), de Tomás Borrás. En la novela se ofrece un retrato deshumanizado del otro marroquí. Se inscribe en el discurso africanista de la guerra de Marruecos que sostuvieron numerosos autores que más tarde integrarán la nómina de escritores favorables a Francisco Franco durante la Guerra Civil. Por ello, se ubica la novela de Tomás Borrás en el contexto de la narrativa sobre la guerra del Rif y se incide en aspectos comunes en estas obras, como la descripción del «moro» como un ser salvaje y animalizado o el uso de estéticas deformantes como lo grotesco. Seguidamente, se analizan los distintos recursos para representar al otro en la novela, como la animalización, la deformación física o el carnaval en el marco de las tesis de Mijaíl Bajtín. El carnaval desempeña una función esencial en el texto de Borrás porque sirve para mostrar a los bereberes como seres salvajes, algo que posibilita la aceptación de un discurso africanista que justifique la intervención española en suelo africano. Por otro lado, el carnaval y la estética de lo grotesco problematizan la visión unívoca, monolítica de la guerra, y la presentan como el resultado de una farsa continuada que rebaja todo aspecto heroico e idealizado. Por último, se incide en algunos aspectos grotescos que permiten conectar La pared de tela de araña con la novelística posterior de Tomás Borrás.
