Abstract

Cet article est consacré à l’infrastructure du « système Dowding », dont le noyau épistémique était la production et la représentation d’images de la situation aérienne en Grande-Bretagne à l’époque de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Ces images, qui étaient visualisées dans des postes de commandement centralisés (operations rooms), étaient alimentées par les données d’un réseau de stations radar réparties dans divers sites, ainsi que des postes des services d’écoute et d’observation du Corps des observateurs britanniques du Royaume. Si, plus tard, le traitement des images de la situation aérienne sera confié à des ordinateurs numériques, dans le « système Dowding », il était encore lié à des pratiques manuelles et à une chaîne d’opérations gérées par des acteurs humains. Ces images étaient créées de manière collaborative sur des tables cartographiques et fonctionnalisaient en même temps une perspective plongeante grâce à la conception architectonique des postes de commandement. Cette traduction de l’espace aérien en une surface de données visible à la verticale constitue la caractéristique opérationnelle de la « salle des opérations » et le rôle de leurs connaissances en matière de surveillance militaire.
