Abstract

El texto autobiográfico de Harriet Jacobs titulado Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl; Writing by herself (1861) es el primero escrito y publicado por una esclava en los Estados Unidos; en él, la autora introduce tempranamente referencias a cuestiones de género (poder, sexualidad, maternidad, abusos, etc.). Esta investigación se centra en la representación de la relación ama-esclava a partir del análisis histórico de dicha fuente, para destacar, en primer lugar, la importancia de los escritos de esclavos en el estudio del pasado en clave de género; y, en segundo término, evidenciar el vínculo complejo y desigual entre mujeres en el marco del sistema esclavista del sur estadounidense. Se concluye que la narrativa de mujeres esclavas, y en particular el texto de Jacobs, resulta un recurso valioso para el estudio de la historia desde la perspectiva de género, ya que complejiza el análisis del pasado al hacer posible distinguir y delinear diferentes modelos de mujeres sureñas según sus comportamientos con sus esclavas y, así, cuestionar abordajes homogéneos e interpretaciones simplistas de la representación de lo acontecido.
