Control of single-phase two-level grid connected inverters are easy with conventional controllers. Whereas, the conventional control of multilevel inverters is a challenging problem and hard to implement in digital signal processors (DSP). Model predictive control (MPC) is a sophisticated control system that is highly consistent with recent DSPs. Hence, this work presents a generalized MPC algorithm for single-phase grid connected multilevel inverters. The total harmonic distortion of injected grid current and filter requirement with the variation of number of voltage levels are analyzed with the generalized MPC algorithm. The generalized algorithm operation is verified on a 13-level multilevel dc-link inverter simulation in MATLAB/Simulink.
