Professional preferences and employment of graduates of special (correctional) schools

Abstract

The search for effective approaches to social support for graduates of special (correctional) schools in the conditions of modern society is undoubtedly an important problem in the field of special psychology and pedagogy. The choice of profession at the final stage of school education should be the basis of work in this direction.Research objective: to determine professional preferences and employment opportunities of graduates of special (correctional) schools, to develop recommendations for the purpose of organizing work on their career guidance.Materials and methods include modern views of sociologists, psychologists and teachers to the problem of professional self-determination and employment of persons with disabilities. We relied on the theory of L.S. Vygotsky's classical approach to the issues of development, labour education and socialization of disabled people, and used the adapted material of E.A. Klimov's differential diagnostic questionnaire. As a result of the study, characteristics were identified that allowed not only to identify and understand the relevance of adolescents' capabilities and interests to the profession, but also to outline their problems. The significance of our research lies in the fact that we have analysed the employment opportunities for graduates of special (correctional) schools in the region, correlated them with the results of testing of professional preferences, developed and tested recommendations for the organization of their support in the process of career guidance. The content of vocational guidance modules in the following areas was proposed and tested: ‘acquaintance with professions’; formation of the basics of co-operation with peers and older generations; education of productive interaction skills within the preferred sphere of professional activity; conducting trainings aimed at understanding the basics of legal literacy in the chosen profession. Taking into account the results of monitoring the employment of graduates of special (correctional) schools and the application of the proposed recommendations by the educational organization will increase the effectiveness of the work of the teaching staff to prepare students for the requirements of the modern labour market, taking into account the objective health limitations, real opportunities and prospects for future employment, as well as considering the preferences of students.
