Guarda-roupa: anatomia de um termo polissémico (séculos XV e XVI)

Abstract

O termo guarda-roupa tem suscitado alguma confusão na bibliografia que trata do funcionamento da casa nobre no Portugal moderno. Na verdade, ele é um termo polissémico que designa um conjunto diverso de realidades relacionadas entre si mas não totalmente coincidentes. Tal variedade fazia com que o termo fosse passível de ser usado no masculino e no feminino, designando coisas distintas. Com o objectivo de esclarecer essas diferentes significações, este artigo explorará os quatro sentidos em que a palavra era usada, começando por esclarecer o referido problema de género. A partir do caso bem documentado do 5º Duque de Bragança, D. Teodósio I, explorar-se-á o conteúdo de duas guarda-roupas (as sua e a da sua segunda mulher) para melhor perceber a que correspondem. Finalmente, será ainda analisada a cerimónia palatina quotidiana do acordar do duque que também envolve a guarda-roupa. Assim se perceberá a plenitude da complexidade do termo.
