Jahrhundert

Abstract

This study examines the emancipatory potential of late 19th-century and early 20th-century Czech cookbooks, asking how these texts provided women with new social, economic, and intellectual opportunities despite prevailing gender norms. The research focuses on the selected works of four cookbook authors: Magdalena Dobromila Rettigová, Anuše Kejřová, Marie Ulehlová-Tilschová, and Marie Janků-Sandtnerová. These women used their writing to navigate restrictive societal structures, gaining public recognition and inspiring other women to participate in cultural and intellectual life. Despite structural limitations and class-based disparities, their work facilitated social mobility and provided access to spaces traditionally closed to women. Hence, cookbooks were more than collections of recipes. They functioned as tools of empowerment, enabling women to challenge conventions, secure financial autonomy, and con-tribute to both social change and national identity formation. Their impact demonstrates how, even within restrictive gender roles, women created new avenues for agency and influence.
