Abstract

English abstract The Pupils’ Exercise of Judgment – From the Authorities’ Intentions to the Teacher’s Pedagogical Praxis In this article I discuss the results of dialogues with 108 student teachers – divided into focus groups during two teaching sessions – where the topic was the pupils’ use of judgment in various educational activities highlighted in the Norwegian curricula. There were two goals for this pedagogical design experiment: Firstly, to develop a teaching programme where the student teachers in dialogue with each other use pedagogical judgment individually and collectively to translate competence goals into pedagogical practice. Secondly, to use the article’s theoretical background and the dialogues with the student teachers in the answering of the article’s overall research question: Do current curricula in Norwegian schools enable, actualise and promote well-founded exercise of judgment among pupils? The results from this study provide grounds for claiming that the governing documents should clarify how teachers and students can understand what sufficiently reasoned exercise of judgment entails, and to what extent the competence goals should signal collective working methods.
