Abstract

Haemoproteus columbae est un parasite hémosporidien commun des pigeons sauvages (Columba livia) signalé dans le monde entier. En Thaïlande, la population de pigeons sauvages augmente en raison de la monoculture des rizières. Cependant, il existe peu de rapports sur la présence de H. columbae dans ces populations de pigeons. L'objectif de l'étude était de caractériser H. columbae chez les pigeons sauvages. Au total, 87 pigeons sauvages ont été examinés à l'aide de méthodes microscopiques et moléculaires. Haemoproteus columbae a été détecté chez environ 27,6% des pigeons et leurs caractéristiques morphologiques ont été décrites. La séquence partielle du gène du cytochrome b (cyt b) de H. columbae a ensuite été caractérisée en trois lignées communes (HAECOL1, COLIV03 et COQUI05). En mettant en évidence les caractéristiques morphologiques et génétiques de H. columbae que l'on trouve couramment dans cette population de pigeons, cette étude fournit des connaissances régionales essentielles sur les parasites hémosporidiens qui pourraient bénéficier de futures études taxonomiques et phylogéographiques.

Haemoproteus columbae es un parásito hemoesporidiano común de las palomas silvestres (Columba livia) reportado en todo el mundo. En Tailandia, la población de palomas silvestres está aumentando debido al monocultivo de arrozales. Sin embargo, hay informes limitados sobre la presencia de H. columbae en estas poblaciones de palomas. El objetivo del estudio fue caracterizar H. columbae en palomas silvestres. Se examinaron un total de 87 palomas silvestres utilizando métodos microscópicos y moleculares. Se detectó Haemoproteus columbae en aproximadamente el 27,6% de las palomas y se describieron sus características morfológicas. La secuencia génica parcial del citocromo b (cyt b) de H. columbae se caracterizó en tres linajes comunes (HAECOL1, COLIV03 y COQUI05). Al resaltar las características morfológicas y genéticas de H. columbae que se encuentran comúnmente en esta población de palomas, este estudio proporciona un conocimiento regional esencial sobre los parásitos hemosporidianos que podría beneficiar futuros estudios taxonómicos y filogeográficos.

Haemoproteus columbae is a common haemosporidian parasite of wild pigeons (Columba livia) reported worldwide. In Thailand, the wild pigeon population is increasing due to paddy field monoculture. However, there are limited reports on the presence of H. columbae in these pigeon populations. The aim of the study was to characterize H. columbae in wild pigeons. A total of 87 wild pigeons were examined using microscopic and molecular methods. Haemoproteus columbae was detected in approximately 27.6% of pigeons and their morphological characteristics were described. The partial cytochrome b (cyt b) gene sequence of H. columbae was then characterized into three common lineages (HAECOL1, COLIV03, and COQUI05). By highlighting the morphologic and genetic characteristics of H. columbae commonly found in this population of pigeons, this study provides essential regional knowledge about haemosporidian parasites that could benefit future taxonomic and phylogeographic studies.
