DESIGNING FOR EMERGENCIES: A METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH IN PRODUCT DESIGN EDUCATION

Abstract

In recent years, emergencies—whether climatic, geological, hydrological, or humanitarian—have become an increasingly global challenge. The rising frequency and intensity of natural disasters, environmental crises, and social emergencies underscore the urgent need for innovative solutions to strengthen the resilience and adaptability of affected communities. In this context, design plays a crucial role in developing effective, humanity-centered responses that address real-world needs. Integrating emergency-related challenges into product design education offers multiple benefits. For young designers, it provides an opportunity to engage with complex, real-life scenarios, fostering critical problem-solving skills, creativity, and social responsibility. Working on emergency-oriented projects allows design students to develop a deep understanding of key constraints such as resource scarcity, the necessity for rapid implementation and usability under critical conditions. From a societal perspective, introducing Design for Emergencies into educational programs fosters the development of innovative and sustainable solutions that can be applied in crisis contexts. By incorporating these topics into design studios, universities can act as incubators for ideas that address urgent global issues, bridging the gap between academic research and practical application. This paper presents a methodological approach implemented at the IUAV University of Venice (Italy) and a selection of the results achieved, which were also part of an international project and received significant national recognition.
