Abstract

Cet article traite des appellations des sorciers et sorcières dans les premiers dictionnaires estoniens, remontant aux xviie et xviiie siècles. Leurs auteurs étaient des ecclésiastiques luthériens. Ils ont décrit le métier de sorcier par plus de vingt radicaux différents, dont les équivalents allemands ont été très souvent rendus par les deux mots Zauberer et Hexe, aux champs sémantiques très larges. L’auteur se demande ce qu’on peut affirmer sur ces noms de métier sur la base de ces dictionnaires et il présente aussi les appellations identifiées lors des collectes de langue dialectale des xixe et xxe siècles, qui n’étaient pas reflétées dans les dictionnaires antérieurs. Si les noms désignant les sorciers et sorcières dans les dictionnaires des xviie et xviiie siècles sont relativement peu nombreux, ces données plus récentes suggèrent que l’usage populaire réel comportait en réalité un très grand nombre de termes couvrant le métier de sorcier, et qu’il en allait très probablement de même dans les siècles précédents, même si cette richesse lexicale n’est pas reflétée dans les dictionnaires
