
Das »Projekt Alexandria« am CERN hatte zwischen 1993 und 1995 das ehrgeizige Ziel, mit der W3O eine World Wide Web-Organisation zu gründen. Marcus M. Rommel gibt erstmals fundierte empirische Einblicke in das Vorhaben und wertet es medienhistorisch aus. Reichhaltige Archivmaterialien des CERN zeigen die Entwicklungen des frühen Webs auf und unterstreichen Europas maßgeblichen Beitrag für dessen Standardisierung sowie technische Weiterentwicklung – und lüften darüber hinaus auch das Geheimnis, warum das Projekt schlussendlich nicht weiterverfolgt wurde.
