Abstract According to literary sources there existed a very ancient Athenaion/Minervium nearby the city of Sorrento. Many scholars have tried to identify its archaeological traces over time and, through the finding of sporadic material and the extraordinary discovery of an Oscan-language rock inscription, there is now almost unanimous agreement on locating it on the promontory of Punta della Campanella. According to the most recent studies, its cult should be attributed to an original local elaboration of the goddess Minerva wearing a Phrygian helmet.
