Potenciales terapéuticos del peyote entre no indígenas en México

Abstract

El uso terapéutico del peyote ocupa un lugar destacado en los círculos y contextos rituales de curación en diferentes partes del territorio nacional mexicano. El objetivo en este artículo es evaluar desde un enfoque psiquiátrico y antropológico los beneficios terapéuticos entre miembros (hombres y mujeres) no indígenas de clase media, que lo consumen dentro del formato ritual de la Iglesia Nativa Americana. Para ello nos apoyamos en entrevistas abiertas y estructuradas para evidenciar trastornos y riesgos por el consumo de drogas, particularmente el peyote. Entre los resultados más relevantes encontramos: la construcción de narrativas en las cuales se asume un proceso de cura o sanación patente en el cambio de hábitos y el tipo de relacionamientos sociales. Desde el punto de vista clínico, 85% de la muestra presenta mejorías evidentes a su situación previa. Los hallazgos nos permiten resaltar el papel que juega un ritual altamente disciplinario, así como la creación de lazos afectivos y emocionales entre el grupo. Nuevas inquietudes nos empujan a ampliar el horizonte de estudio para corroborar estos resultados.
