Abstract

This paper aims to offer a renewed perspective on the topic of dystopian fiction, specially focusing on the treatment of space and its problematization in literary as well as in audiovisual contemporary works. The origins and transformations of the dystopian literary genre are outlined from a genealogical standpoint and related to the dialectics between utopian and dystopian thinking, which is understood as one of the most relevant keys to the interpretation of formal evolution and meaning of dystopian works. The footprints of these dialectics are tracked in a literary and audiovisual corpus from the Bakhtin’s theory of chronotope and the relationship that they establish between the spatial models of the island (genuinely utopian) and the border (typically dystopian).
