Abstract

El periodo final del trafico del Galeon de Manila ha sido siempre dejado de lado en los estudios sobre esta la linea maritima comercial. La idea repetida constantemente ha sido que a partir de mediados del siglo XVIII entro en una fase de decadencia grave, que se vio todavia mas acentuada por la competencia que le hizo la Real Compania de Filipinas, hasta llegar a su disolucion final en 1815. No obstante, y a raiz de la documentacion consultada recientemente en el transcurso de nuestra investigacion para la realizacion de una Tesis Doctoral, estamos en disposicion de afirmar que esta es una idea que deberia corregirse: el comercio de la Nao de Acapulco se mantuvo estable en sus niveles durante todo el siglo XVIII, y el poco comercio que la Compania de Filipinas hizo con la Nueva Espana afecto en poca o ninguna medida al del Galeon, puesto que ambas empresas comerciaban con diferentes productos. Asi pues, nos inclinamos a pensar que esa supuesta decadencia fue inexistente, tendiendo mas bien hacia una continuidad manifiesta incluso despues de la supresion de la linea. Es mas, el comercio tradicional entre Manila y Acapulco llevado a cabo a traves de la Nao de China perduro al menos hasta 1821, con unos niveles de comercio y unos generos iguales a los que hasta la fecha se habian tenido.
