Analysis of the specific features of determining the coefficients of stress concentration in hull structures

Abstract

The stress concentration factors by various authors have been studied and generalized. Some of the authors interpret them as a ratio of the maximum to medium stresses in the most underdesigned part of the structure. Others suggest that the stress concentration factor is a ratio of the maximum to medium stresses in the most remote from the concentrator part of the structure. These two trends are compared by the example of a plate with a circular hole and a discontinuous plate. The results of the calculations in both approaches may vary considerably. The reliable results for the formation and generalization of the stress concentration factors substantialized by various authors are also given in this paper. According to the results of the study, the theories of failure, e.g. maximum-strain-energy theory, are suggested to be used for estimating the stress concentration factors at the concentrator circuit. The values of the stress concentration factors are determined by the ratio of the reduced stresses using the assumed theory of failure in the most critical point of the concentrator circuit to the reduced stresses away from this circuit. Such representation of the stress concentration factor is the most viable, since current strength software systems, such as ANSYS, represent calculation results in reduced stresses.
