Abstract

En el presente artículo proponemos revisar la atención al parto y al neonato en la Roma Imperial a través de Sorano y su Gynaecia. En este tratado resulta llamativo para el público actual, inmerso en un nuevo modelo de atención neonatal, la ausencia de la madre en los cuidados de su hijo en favor de otras figuras femeninas como la comadrona o, sobre todo, la nodriza. El médico griego parece empeñado en “alejar” a la progenitora del neonato poniéndole en manos de estas mujeres que asumirán el control de sus cuidados, bajo la supervisión del pater familias. Sin embargo, no podemos olvidar la autoridad del médico ni su influencia en la toma de decisiones paternas y en la opinión materna. Por esto, en nuestro estudio analizaremos, de modo especial, el rol desempeñado por Sorano en la recepción y difusión de estas prácticas que distanciaban, al menos físicamente, al bebé de su madre.
