Abstract

The study of growth strain was carried out on standing young trees ( 6 and 8 years olds), with the objective of measuring and analyzing the variability of growth stress in four poplar hybrids (I-488, I-63/ 51, NNDV, Luiza Avanzo) located in the zone of Retiro, Maule region of Chile. The measurements were made in linear plots of ten trees in each plantation of the hybrid studied. The growth strain was measured in each tree at the Dap height according to CIRAD protocol and using an instrument designed by this French Investigation Center which records indirectly the longitudinal growth stress in standing trees. The growth strain values are pretty high (general average value of 0,125 mm) and don’t show significant difference between the four hybrids which have grown in the same climate, site and forestry management system. The greatest variability of the values is in hybrids NNDV, Luisa Avanzo and I-63/51 (30,7%, 27,71%, 25,1% respectively). On the contrary the I-488 hybrid is the one with the smallest variability (14,4%).
