PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF BLOOD DONATION MOTIVATION

Abstract

The article discusses the psychological aspects of blood donation motivation. More than a million blood units are taken from donors every year; however, this is still not enough to meet global demand and ensure adequate and timely blood supply. The likelihood of contracting infectious diseases, such as hepatitis, is much higher from paid donors. It is extremely important to involve voluntary donors in donation, since they are more responsible and financially neautral. In order to attract voluntary donors who donate blood, it is important to understand what attracts them, and what, on the contrary, raises concerns and hinders this process. This paper identifies the following types of motivation of prosocial behavior: altruistic, pragmatic, egoistic, one that increases personal significance and self-improvement. The donor's leading values in life are able to motivate them to altruistic activities in order to help others and gain approval and recognition from other people.
