School absenteeism is a growing problem. To develop targeted interventions for different types of individuals, more knowledge of underlying risk and protective factors is needed. This study examined the developmental trajectories of school absences from primary school (Grade 6) to lower secondary school (Grade 9) and related risk and protective factors. The sample consisted of 1,823 Finnish students (T1, mean age 12.76 years, 954 boys). Students reported their school absences due to sickness, truancy, and other reasons in Grades 6, 7, and 9, as well as various risk and protective factors. Four trajectories of school absences were detected: low-stable (92%), high-stable (4.3%), increasing (2.4%), and early started (1.2%). A cynical attitude toward school and low perceived support were risk factors for early started school absences, whereas high cognitive engagement protected against school absences. These results highlight the importance of early detection and prevention of risk factors related to school absenteeism.
