SYNCHRONOUS ROBBERIES IN SARMATIAN BARROWS

Authors: S.A. Yatsenko;

SYNCHRONOUS ROBBERIES IN SARMATIAN BARROWS

Abstract

The article deals with the problem of revealing and analyzing ancient synchronous robberies of the barrows based on the materials recorded in the course of the excavation work of a number of the Sarmatian burial mounds in a large area of the Don basin. The article refers to particular cases of robbery and offers a wide range of available explanations. The author cannot in complete assurance say that all cases of destruction in the graves referred to in the article are the result of any particular robbery. However, the available data makes this assumption more reasonable for now. The given version has been verified in different ways: it takes into account the age and gender composition of the remains in the graves that were robbed; identifies possible methods used for intrusion into a burial and concludes that, in nomadic societies, the practice of such activities could be different than in settled groups of population. It also presents a significant volume of factual material which brings attention to the further development of the designated problem and urges colleagues to commit to clearer field recording while examining the destroyed barrows.
