Abstract This paper characterizes the architecture of three sites (Tulor-1, Calar and Ghatchi-2C) by contrasting our results with the records already available about the Formative Period's architecture in the region and nearby places. This enable us to discuss the evolution of villager settlement patterns and its impact in the overall settlement system. The importance ritual factors seemed to have in the development of architecture is linked to a social context eminently composed by shepherd societies and the relatively important role played by their settlements as they consolidated into enclaves of a new cultural landscape. Palabras clave : domestic architecture; San Pedro de Atacama; Formative Period; social evolution.
