Abstract

Introducción: al bajo peso al nacer se asocian múltiples factores de riesgo. Objetivo: profundizar en el estudio de los factores que inciden en el bajo peso al nacer. Métodos: la búsqueda bibliográfica se realizó entre los años 1992 y 2017, el 75% de los artículos seleccionados fueron publicados en los últimos cinco años y los de mayor actualización fueron los de revistas digitales disponibles en bases de datos regionales como SciELO, EBSCO y MEDLINE. Desarrollo: las edades extremas de la vida, el hábito de fumar en la embarazada (por la concentración de nicotina, que afecta el crecimiento y el desarrollo del feto y disminuye su oxigenación y su nutrición), la infección vaginal (que provoca modificaciones cervicales precoces o desencadena la actividad uterina y lleva a un parto pretérmino) y la anemia son factores importantes en la determinación de peso al nacer. Conclusiones: diversas condiciones maternas: la anemia, la infección de la vía urinaria, la preeclampsia, la rotura prematura de membranas, la poca ganancia de peso ponderal materna, el síndrome hipertensivo del embarazo, los factores psicosociales y el tabaquismo son riesgos predictores de bajo peso al nacer.
