A ninfa e o jaguar: corpos e dominação no vale do amanhecer/ The ninfa and the jaguar: bodies and domination in the valley of the dawn

Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper seeks to discuss the dynamics of symbolic domination through the body, based on ethnographic research conducted in the branches of the Valley of the Dawn in the cities of São Lourenço da Mata and Recife – Pernambuco. We seek to explore how religious rituals that are experienced in the Valley of the Dawn reproduce and reinforce the structures of domination, which is based on gender relations present in the surrounding society, appearing through the binomial ninfa and jaguar, representing female and male supporters respectively. This symbolic domination would be reproduced and reinforced through the internalization of classification systems, that are perpetuated through ritual practices lived in this movement, and confined to the bodies of subjects since this classification is essentially embodied.
