Abstract

Samizdat (literally: “self-publishing”) is an important part of the Protestant subculture in the USSR. It can be classified in several categories: methods of copying, types of publications, language, content, confessional orientation, volume, forms of organization. Beside the non-structured Samizdat, there were some underground samizdat publishing houses: “The Christian”, “The Faithful Witness”, “The eternity”, and some isolated groups of protestants — workers of samizdat. The special features of developing of samizdat are: the diversity of its forms, mass involvement of believers, evolution from primitive copy techniques to professional printery, in the structured samizdat – interest in remedial issues. Keywords: Samizdat, Evangelical Christians-Baptists, Baptists-Iniciativnicks, Seventh-Day Adventists, Adventists-Reformists, Pentecostals, Jehovah's Witnesses.
