Vigilância entomológica e controle de vetores do dengue Entomological surveillance and control of dengue fever vectors

Abstract

This paper is about the ecology of Aedes aegypti and addresses some relevant questions on dengue fever transmission and control. It identifies issues to be investigated, considering the current epidemiological context of dengue fever in Brazil. Another aim of this text was to detect gaps in the understanding of the ecology of Aedes aegypti, which could be important to improve and review vector control programs in the country. This paper reviewed studies that show the influence of climatic conditions (temperature, rainfall, and altitude) in insect file cycle. It also identified scientific investigations on the dispersion, domestic habits, blood feeding, reproduction, and vector competence of the Aedes aegypti. It discusses the relevance of this information on the dissemination of the disease and organization of control measures. Vector insecticide resistance has been studied in many parts of the world, so this study also emphasizes the importance of systematic monitoring of chemical utilization in the field. It briefly presents some common physical, chemical, and biological alternative control measures used in Brazil.
