Abstract

Trata-se da transcrição do manuscrito “Memória sobre as Viagens Filosóficas”, de autoria do naturalista luso-americano Manuel Galvão da Silva (Bahia, 1750-?). No texto introdutório, analisamos esse documento em conjunto com outros escritos de Galvão da Silva, bem como com as instruções de viagem que recebeu para ir à Bahia, Goa e Moçambique – este último, o local onde foi escrito. Discutimos também sobre a possível data e a finalidade para a qual foi redigido. Sua leitura permite concluir que uma das principais preocupações do naturalista era a questão da saúde. As enfermidades foram uma constante na sua trajetória como viajante e, com base na debilitação de seu estado de saúde, procura justificar os baixos resultados alcançados no exame da natureza local.
