Los arrecifes del Caribe nicaragüense

Abstract

En el número precedente de Wani, discutí brevemente tres de los ecosistemas más productivos del planeta pastos marinos, manglares y corales que abundan en la extensa plataforma continental del Caribe nicaragüense. El presente artículo, el segundo de una serie, reúne la escasa información disponible sobre los ecosistemas de los arrecifes de coral, en la Región Autónoma Atlántico Sur (RAAS), la contraparte ecológica en el mar de los bosques tropicales húmedos de Nicaragua. Por más de 230 millones de años, los corales y las espectaculares criaturas que los habitan han evolucionado juntos en los océanos tropicales del mundo. La enorme diversidad de plantas y animales que vemos hoy en día en los arrecifes de coral (uno solo de ellos puede albergar miles de especies de flora y fauna hospedantes) son el resultado de millones de años de cambio y adaptación biológica de las poderosas fuerzas de la naturaleza. Los sobrevivientes están adaptados a vivir dentro del estrecho margen de tolerancia establecido por los parámetros físicos (e. g., mareas, corrientes, transparencia del agua) y químicos (salinidad, nutrientes) que caracterizan las áreas en las que los arrecifes crecen. El tiempo ha producido también intrincadas relaciones ecológicas y de comportamiento que se encuentran en pocos lugares en el planeta.
